A FEW TIPS FOR GERMINATING SEED.
« on: November 12, 2009, 15:53:05 »
For Beginners,
Clivia seed is one of the easiest seed to germinate.

1.Work with FRESH seed.Arrange to have your seed ready for sowing in July ,Aug. before weather warms up and the "baddies " ( GOGGAS, Insects ) become active.

2.  Don`t handle seed ,medium , and containers with bare fingers.  Wear disposable gloves!

3. Sterilize seed ,medium and containers properly.

4. Germinating medium should just be damp ***not wet,no water should run to the bottom of the germinating container.

5. Make sure seeds aren`t dehydrated. Soak in clean water for a day or 3 if unsure.

****  THIS IS IMPORTANT ***If the seed is dehydrated, the membrane on the seed will be hard and the root will not be able to emerge. The root will then die and rot in the seed, leaving a hole that looks like a worm has burrowed it`s way in.This rotting matter attracts the gnats and then all sorts of problems begin.

6. Cover your seed in the container and place in a warm area.

7. When the seed has germinated and the first leaf appears, plant out.Take all the same hygiene precautions as with the germinating of seed.

8. Most important, don`t overwater your seedlings, allow the medium to almost dry out between watering.

Best regards,
                Lionel and Debbie.

Good tips Lionel.  So far I'm not too happy with my first seeds, as most seem to have died, turned soft and dark with no shoot, no mold at least.  I have a few with shoots coming and I'll keep trying.

May I add a couple of extra`s

use Perlite as your growing medium IMHO there`s nothing better, also if you are open air germinating spray with bleach 5% once a day

Thanks for the tips Lionel!
Is it normal that the roots from the little seedlings are some kind of hairy or is it mildew?

The "hairy" at the point where the root joins the green is normal and is fine root hairs and not fungus.  On top of the seed coat it is fungus.

Fritz,
Sunlight dishwashing liquid has chemicals in it that kills germs, bacteria, etc.

So it is good to rinse your dishes in clean water after using the soap.

Best Regards,

                 Lionel.

P.S. I grew some seed on for your dad last year when he was in hospital.
I am sure he would love you to have some.
When you are down this way,let me know, you should take some.

Here is a picture I took a few days ago showing a germinating seed sowed about 50 days ago in the coconut husk chips. I did nothing special on the seed. The container is just covered with a plastic bag to keep moisture without watering for 50 days.

I see, you leave the seed under a plastic bag for 50 days without watering? Nice to know WuJin, it's brilliant that it works for such a long time!
It would be nice if you can take a picture of your container-construction  :)

Boil the water that you use to germenade the seeds with if you using a germinating bocks and small containers to germinate the seeds in. Donít boil the water in the microwave. Use a kettle or a pot to do it in. Let it cool down to room temperate and use then in spray bottles on the medium u use to germinate your seeds on.We use perlite as a germenating medium.

And we put the plastic containers we use in the dishwasher when we finished germinating seeds. The next year when we start geminating seeds again we wash the containers again in the dishwasher before we use it. Wash your hands for 20 seconds with an antiseptic soup before you work with the seeds.

We use sunlight dishwashing liquid to wash the seeds wiht and we leaf it over night in sunlight water as. We germenated between 3000 and 4000 seeds this year on this old methed. I got a 98% germinating rate by using this methode for the last 3 years.Remember there is a lot diffrent ways to germenated seed with use the methed that wordk for you.

Seed germinating time is here in a month or 2 .

If you are using a commercial seedling mix , prepare your  mix now .

Fill your seed containers now and leave in the sun and rain for the next 2 to 3 months .

This will allow the mix to decompose properly  and the sun will sterilize the medium.

Point no 5 above , I am soaking my seed for at least a week in clean water before planting .

Regards,
             Lionel.
