THE PERFECT CLIVIA or do we know what we want?
« on: June 18, 2007, 04:32:09 »
I was very interested when someone on the forum called his clivia "The Perfect Clivia". In fact I was all the more interested because this was an orange clivia, a common colour? It was unfortunate though that my question on why he called this the "perfect clivia" met with no response. Was it the colour, shape, umbel, plant form or all of the above?

Now this posting is not about that flower or anything like it. It's just what the heading says, The Perfect Clivia. It is surprising what an individual perception of the "perfect clivia" can be. There are those that goes for the plant (form and shape), while others think that the flowers is what clivia is all about. Yes, it is true that many uses the combination of both as the "thing" to follow.

If I were to ask the question, "what is your perfect clivia?", there will be many who says I love them all. Others will say gardenii, caulescens, miniata types, etc. The truth is that many of us have absolutely no idea what we are going for. We are just joining the mad rush towards  ??? ??? ???. Yes, that's it, that's because we do not know what's around the corner ???. Let's face it, many of us are just following the "Clivia fashion guru" anyway.

I, for one, will be interested in how one's perspective of "the perfect clivia" has changed through out the years to the present. So, what's your "perfect clivia" for you now?  the :good:

To all -

The perfect Clivia is the one I see in my dreams, the first one I see when I open my eyes in the morning, the one I'm looking at now, and whichever one I behold at any moment.

Gideon -

That is a wonderful Clivia. But I've heard in alternate second months the umbels flower sky blue!  :welldone:

...Of course, she's also a smart Clivia (had her coffee hot): she knows to send out many offsets because there is no way she can set seed and ripen it without looking like a pincushion by the end of one year.

 LOL LOL LOL

My perfect clivia;
I'm probably one of the few people on this forum that's not so terribly interested in short, broad etc.I have some and i enjoy them but for me it's about the flowers.I like the flowers and there is a lot of variation out there.Wouldn't it be nice to have one of each form there is out there.

I have several diseases(plant interests)but any nice flower out there draws my attention.

I have decided last week to specialise in one specific flwr form. This was a needed decision but it took quite a while to make up my mind. This is simply because logistics and time is forcing me to make up my mind.
I have to mention aswell that virility have to be insisted upon.

Just a few thoughts.

(on the left is a softdrink can)

This is what I'd like to have.
Right now I'm pollinating my gardenii x miniata and gardenii with Sparrow pollen. Hopefully I can get some seeds.

Hi Bunseng
As far as I am concerned, you are not far off, this is most beautiful. Where does this one come from, what is it called etc??

Bunseng -

I for one, am having a difficult time believing those flowers belong on those leaves. With such lovely round tipped short leaves, you don't need a flower on that one. But if those are it's flowers, major kudos!

This is what I'd like to have.

Bungseng,
I noticed that you said that is what you would like to have rather that what you have. Is this plant yours?

I agree that this is one of the most well shaped miniature anywhere.

Thank you,
Chris

It's my dream clivia. I'm sorry to tell everyone that the picture is fictitious. I have a better picture in mind, but this is the best I can do in Adobe Photoshop. The plant is Mr Cui's best and the umbel is from a picture of a Nakamura's Interspecific.

I like the miniature clivias such as Sparrow, Heng, miniature Monk etc., but their flowers are all normal size. So the proportion looks wrong to me. I think if these pigmies can be combined with other species or interspecifics, the proportion might improve. What do you think?

Having dabbled extensively in orchids, I do not see that flower as too big. This is nature's way and small plants like Sophronitis have big flowers while some big plants have tiny flowers.

I will be satisfied with a plant showing just this proportion. Call it dwarfs (I think this is an insult to out fellow "small' people) or miniatures, I really cannot see the difference. It'll still be a beautiful plants with a desirable bloom.

I started this thread to show that we are all different. While we may follow the "fashion of the day", many of us have our preferences. That's the main reason why every clivia is beautiful in the eyes of someone, somewhere.

In my early days as gardener and not Cliviaphile I and a much older and more experienced friend and breeder of note went in search of the then illusive yellows at a distant nursery. The plants were sold against the better judgement of the grower but his wife needed the space for her enterprise, waterplants. I saw an unusually dark brown-orange Clivia which I selected and he said that it had to be the ugliest Clivia in God's creation! Its abandoned in a garden somewhere and I wish I still had it now!
Here is a plant from the same time - simple and low on flower count but I treasure it because it is one of my first seedlings raised to bloom

http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb104/rogerfisher_photos/DSCF0039.jpg

and here my first yellow from a seed my senior friend gave me then since he was one of few with such palnts and that was before 1992 when the Clivia Club, now Society was formed.

http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb104/rogerfisher_photos/DSCF0036.jpg

It has an interesting lineage since the original genepool is that of Gladys Blackbeard through Gordon Mc Neil
Again not spectacular but special because of the history and sentiment. So there is no perfect Clivia, only those in your heart and of your heart's desire. And we all know the heart is a fickle thing!

Bunseng, your compilation is really stunning and very creative - Well done!!!.
Roger, I agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder(I know, I know-sorry for using it). I like the first photo you posted. It is very delicate and the balance of the colours is very good.

Bunseng -

So what do I win for guessing this was a fake picture? Judging standards aside, there are many reasons for many people to like many different Clivia.
