Something else I would have liked to be considered by judges is the principle of "PUT A PLANT UP FOR ITS VIRTUES, DO NOT PUT IT DOWN FOR ITS FAULTS'. Let's say we look at a plant with scars (from wind, hail, etc.), points can be deducted for this but please do not disregard the virtues of the plant just because of this? Another example, if there is a plant with a wonderful colour, good leaves, form etc. but a little opening in the umbel, do not disregard this plant against u full posy with 30 mediocre flowers and mediocre leaves just because of the umbel!!??

Thank you for this information Dries. It must be difficult to find a balance between ensuring a high quality of plants and encouraging people to exhibit. I would like to see maybe more novice categories, not just flowering plants. Also an 'open' class where plants that are special, but don't qualify because of too many spent flowers or damaged leaves etc. can be shown. A bit like the 'run what you brung' class at the drag racing. These are just my comments as a novice and are in no way meant to be critical of the people who give their time and effort to run the shows. I'm keen to hear other peoples views on this subject because it will probably always be evolving and improving as the clivias do.

Michael,
Thanks for your input. Maybe more attention should be given to novice classes. After all, that is where we all begin??

I also like the idea of a "public's choice" award, that way we know what to breed to sell at the next years shows and what's popular in the public eye......
