That first link is disgusting.

I think Neil had a very appropriate response.  :)
Don't forget the bright purple and fuchsia colored ones they're offering! :o

Hi Mike.

I totally get the (sarc!).i know that its out of your hands, but the use of the K word is a VERY controversial topic in our country (SA).  Personally, I'd remove the link all together.

I am sure that blue clivias do not exist on earth. From the pictures you can see that the flower color is not natural. These seeds are all fake seeds.

Last time someone posted a link to an ebay "blue clivia" page I used the  "ask the seller a question" feature, just to see what their reaction would be.
I politely asked if they were sure these were clivia as far as I knew clivia growers had yet to create a blue clivia. Could the seeds actually be Agapanthus which do have blue strains.

Their response was
"The seeds are from the Amaryllidaceae family and clivia are part of that family."

Going by their complete indifference to the quite clear distinctions within the family I guess we should only worry if they decide to start selling species in the Equidae family.

Buyers of that ebay offering would need to be aware they could end up with either a horse or a rhinosorous!

It is a great pity that ebay seem to be indifferent to fake sellers on their site. I have complained to ebay about these "Clivia" seed sellers but received no response, in fact the number of obviously fraudulent sellers has increased to the point where it is often difficult to find genuine offers of seed under a search for Clivia seed on ebay.com. That can only have negative consequences for serious traders, potentially beyond ebay as well: if you have been ripped off there, you may well doubt the claims from genuine enthusiasts and breeders.

Barry Gilman once ordered some blue clivia seeds from an Ebay seller, just to see what he'd get.  He got 5 chick peas.  We got a good laugh about that.  It's hard to believe that it's still going on, but as P. T. Barnum said, "there's a sucker born every minute."  To which he might have added, "and a scammer to fleece them."

Nick: I have also complained to Ebay about this very issue, and have also received no reply.  It's a shame, because there are good deals on good clivias to be found on Ebay.  Just know your seller, and know what is likely to be real and what is likely to be fake.  Like seeds of Photoshop-blue clivias.

Diane: I'm having a little back-and-forth with the ambitious young entrepreneur right now.

Neil: I did mention that issue to the seller.

I see they sell the most wonderful black Roses as well, and I've seen colours in one Rose that I have to try.  LOL

Sarel: the horticultural scams on Ebay are legion.

Diane: it's not even worth the bother to copy and paste them.  Just the usual "why you talk bad 'bout me?"  "I just try make money raise kids."  The usual crap.

My report of these ads went in into a black hole.  It's caveat emptor on Ebay.

All true, Mike. That said, I've had some great experiences on eBay with sellers if I asked questions about items to test customer service, made a couple of small purchases to test quality, and tried to engage the seller as a fellow human being. And one does have to be reasonable about the occasional disappointment, same as in the face-to-face world.
