A Question
« on: September 03, 2016, 05:32:13 »
I saw on a FB post the tern "Pollen Bomb"  Am I correct in thinking that means mixing various pollens before applying. Thanks in advance for any answers :) cheers Mary

Yes Mary, absolutely correct. It is also described as 'shotgun' approach, and is often associated with Dave Conway, as he bred a number of named plants from a mass pollination exercise, with best pollen mixed and then applied to best mother plants.
If you haven't read Clivias by Harold Koopowitz, do yourself a favour, and grap a copy....

Thanks a million Michael. I thought as much, just wanted to check :)  I must look it up in my HK Clivia book.  Strange it should come up today as I was thinking along those lines a few days ago in relation to some beautiful Yellows I am lucky enough to own.

Hi Mary.
As a technique, this has a lot going for it - so long as you have plenty of space to grow the seedlings, and don't mind not knowing 50 % of the genetic heritage of the "keepers".
Maybe the greatest potential is the opportunity that high-variety seedling numbers offer to maximise vigour while also improving quality.

And it's a good idea to cultivate a very large circle of friends who will be delighted to receive that gift of  "a nice Orange for the garden". Or get a bigger compost heap, maybe..

Nick
