Miniata x mirabilis
« on: July 22, 2016, 13:51:48 »
Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody has experience with flowering (and pollinating) a miniata x mirabilis? I have one coming into flower and any advice would be much appreciated. Unfortunately I don't know the lineage of the plant but Im super excited to see it in bloom.

I had a Yellow Miniata x Mirabilis flowering for me way back in 2012. The cross was made by John Winter. Unfortunately it had not flowered since.
It is a tall plant and it had a very high flower count. I pollinated it with various miniatas and the seed set was very good.. Hope this helps. Here is a photo of mine.

Thanks for the info Chris. I think mine is also a yellow Miniata x Mirabilis... Cant wait to see it in bloom, yours looks lovely. I have no experience with Mirabilis, any thoughts on what to pollinate it with? Maybe best to wait and see the bloom. Also, this time of year I have limited pollen. I have some stored but how good it is I don't know. I have some bronze green boy x belgies best bronze coming into flower too so that's a thought...

It depends on what you have in mind to produce. Selfing it would be a good option to get a nice yellow interspecific. If you do I wouldn't mind buying a few seeds from you.

Hi Michael. I definitely plan on selfing some flowers. My thinking with the belgian type cross is that the plant is not very large (400mm or so in height) and it has a reasonably compact habit with semi broad leaf width, as the belgians are very compact and broad leaved I thought it may make for an interesting cross with maybe a compact broad leaf inter the result. Also, the belgian flowers are nice and broad so maybe an interesting flower shape with come about. Lastly, the Belgians are quite vigorous and flower sooner than any of my others from seed so I thought it may help to bring about a flower in the progeny sooner. But as I said, I really have zero experience with mirabils (or mirabilis crosses).

The spike is still developing but I will post images of it flowering...

Hi All,

Just an update with where this one is at. It is slowly preparing to flower and doesn't look as though it will for a few weeks yet but the good news is that it seems as though its timing may work well with the rest of my miniata's which are starting to show spikes now so I may have a better selection of fresh pollen at my disposal... here are a few progress pics.

The flower shape is not what I would have guessed it to be, it is more open and squat than what I would have thought. I am very pleased with it but other's more discerning than me may think differently.
