For Beginners .... Irregular growth of leaves .
« on: July 11, 2016, 18:24:32 »
Thought some might find this useful .
This Broad Leaf Chinese Daruma has been growing under a bench with too much shade and cool Temps since it germinated a few years ago .
I moved it to a plastic  covered roof shadehouse a few months ago .
My how it is thriving ... You can see how the top leaf on the left has a formed and how 2 " creases " formed to accommodate the larger width of the bottom part of the leaf  .
The Chinese Daruma  started off growing slow under the bench and then , when exposed to more light and higher Temps , it grew much faster .
The new leaves ( grown since the move ) are glossy , lighter and  much wider than the older leaves .

It is good to give the Quality Chinese Clivias due care ... I must strive to pay them more regular attention .
I have great admiration for the Chinese Growers ... they are Masterful .

Many thanks for this Lionel.
I'm still making far too many stupid mistakes to trust myself to offer advice, but for what it's worth I just invested in a second-hand greenhouse (we all always need extra space, do we not?) and on the advice of  a friend I covered the inside of the glass with a coating of emulsion paint, rather than the shade netting I have elsewhere. The emulslon paint has a TiO2 base which cuts out uv. The result is a much higher intensity of light, but with no direct sun. My new greenhouse has been up and running for little more than a month, but I am astonished at the improved growth rates I am seeing. I don't have any measurements to offer, but i would estimate that it is of the order of a 30% improvement. And the leaves look much healthier too.
