For beginners ..How we pollinate our plants .

Flowers open sequentially .... As each individual flower opens and BEFORE the pollen sacs ripen we slip a straw over each
stigma .

This is done throughout the day by 4 of us , Debbie , Cindy , Zama and I, every day during flowering season .
This allows only a very small space ... ie the end of the straw as opening for stray pollen to reach the stigma  .
The longer the straw the better .... Stray pollen reaching the stigmas is not very likely IMO .
See the straw on the far right .... it has pollen on the outside of the straw so protecting the stigma from being SELFED by
falling pollens .
We do not close the end of the straw as this could lead to heat build up  (the green house effect )  around the stigma and dry the stigma out leading to less or unsuccessful pollination

If the pollen is not required we remove and discard ...

Pollens we will use are removed carefully and placed in a 1.5 mm DNA sample plastic vial .
We leave the pollen vial open for a few days at indoor room temp so that excess moisture from the pollen sac can evaporate.
Pollens are then sealed and stored in the refrigerator .

Regards,
             Lionel and Debbie .
If the vial is sealed immediately the moisture in the pollen sacs can rot the pollen .

I tried to modify this post with this introduction but it timed out so I include it here.
Well begun is half done ... The integrity of pollinations is of paramount importance to all .
The outcome of 6 years growing rests on this effort .
Pollinating is time consuming and requires patience and one pointed attention .....especially if hundreds of pollinations are done .
For me , this is a very special and enjoyable time during flowering seasons.. I spend hours and hours in peace and quiet with the plants from early in the morning till late at night .

Enjoy,
          Lionel.

Lionel,  If I may ask.... What "tools" should one use to perform the actual pollenation?  I've read the use of smaller paint brushes(art) is considered a good method.  Please excuse the beginner question.

Hello Neil ,
Please keep up the questions , many will appreciate them.
We will add to this " Pollinating " thread so please ask as many questions as you wish .
I have taken close up Pics of unripe and ripe pollen sacs and will post when I get back .
I will go into detail on how I do the actual pollinations ... a paint brush is fine if you only have a few flowers but it is wastes a lot of pollen .
We use a quicker way and I will take pics as I go along and share with you guys over the next few days .
I will show how we pollinate many plants when only a scarce amount of pollen is available  later .

Regards,
             Lionel.

Collecting Pollen .
I use my clean index finger ... gently remove the pollen sack with tip of finger and the side of the vial and let the pollen fall into the vial.
I collect the same pollens into a few , say 3 vials , in case I spill or mislay a vial .
Leave the vial open and in a warm place for a day or 2 , with no direct sunlight , so that moisture can evaporate from the vial .
After a few days we store the pollens in the fridge for later use .

Hi everyone....

Thank you Lionel for the post..............can I just add.....to avoid moist in the pollen container I put a few crystals found in pill boxes to keep the moist out. I open the little bag and only take a few individual crystals and add to the pollen.....It works for me! I close the container immediately and never had rotten pollen.

How long will the pollen be viable if A) stored in a fridge, B) stored in a Deep freezer.
Never be defined by your past. It was just a lesson, not a life sentence.
