Thank you Lionel,

I have a 5 year old plant Mirabilis x Appleblossom, very slow growing that I obtained from the late John Winter. I will take a picture of the plant today and post it. Not sure when I will see a flower on that one, lol.
I also have a Appleblossom x Cameron Peach flowering size grown from seed from the Cape Club. Maybe that one could give a flower this year?

regards
Carrie

Carrie, your AB crosses are beautiful. (According to a description on one of the old seedling lists from Mick and John, Woodlands Pink is a seedling from AB complex).
Unfortunately my Q crosses with 'something else' are nothing to write home about if compared to Q's crossed with other Q's. Hope better will come in the next few years.

Oh my! I wrote a long post in reply to Carrie's beautiful AB seedling pics, posted it but obviously got the message that there were other posts and I did not notice it, so my post was lost. Now, I cannot remember what I posted!

Here is the gist of it, I think!

John Winter, who worked at Kirstenbosch, which was part of SANBI (South African National Botanical Institutes), looked after Q1 to Q8, which were collected in the Qolora area, in about 1996 to 1998. They were presented to John Winter and Mick Dower, who were visiting habitats in the Transkei. Q1 to Q7 flowered at Kirstenbosch in the first year of flowering, and the next year Q8 flowered. Kirstenbosch crossed the Q's with each other and after a few years, made seeds available to the public. Ian Brown bought some of these seeds.

Woodlands Pink Blush, is a Q4 x Q6 seedling, from seeds bought by Ian from Kirstenbosch. Ian is one of the few breeders who have made Appleblossom seeds available to the public.

It is such a pity that these genes were protected from the masses for such a long time! Secondly, it is such a pity that the AB genes were mostly kept within other AB crosses. It they had crossed AB with other non AB genes, and then backcrossed them to AB, we would have been so much further down the research chain or using these genes for progress.

Phillip, do not feel alone. When reading the articles on the forum, and seeing all the photos of the beautiful plants I realize that I am still a novice too

This is my Mopi Hirt x Q2 Appleblossom, seed grown from Cape Clivia Club seed many years ago.  I have another seedling still to bloom, I hope it is similar.  I have called this one "Baby's Breath"

Leisl, A great example of how differences in lighting and perhaps a different camera can give different photo results. But whichever is closer to the color as seen by the human eye, I'd take either. Mma Nature wields an exquisite brush.

Excellent start  topic and some stunning flowers posted by members.

Leisl you have me drooling.  Is some of those on your seedlist ?

Kind regards
Eddie

It unfortunately doesn't set a lot of seed :-(  I only estimate 30 seeds total for the whole head of crosses.

Mark you are right about the lighting, both photos were taken with the same camera.  I think the first photo is probably closer to the actual colour.
