Yellow from Tipp peach
« on: September 11, 2015, 00:37:40 »
To all the genetics and group fundi`s:
I am a bit confused by a yellow that popped up among randomly pollinated seedlings from a tipperary peach pod parent.
What group would this belong to?
 Is it a common occurrence?

From my understanding, the Europeaches are not compatible with either group 1 or 2 yellows; is this correct?

Some information about this would be helpful. The flower is nothing like the peach parent, a true yellow, with a floret unlike the peach parent.
The other seedlings from the batch produced both orange and peach flowers so far, with some yet to open. I presumed the peach ones resulted from selfing, and any other pollen would produce orange. The yellow doesn't make sense to me... :-\

Thanks,

Johan

That's a bit of a puzzle....are you sure there was no mix up of seed?  Does the yellow flowers show any bleeding on the petals like Tipperary peach do?

If I am not mistaken Chris Welgemoed did bring yellows into his breeding with the Tipperary Peaches where as the Camerons were only bred amongst each other. He should be able to shed more light on this.

If you self pollinated the plant and it was one of those you can expect a % of orange, yellow and peaches popping up.‎

Or it could be that you simply have an extremely light Tipperary Peach. ‎

Thanks for those inputs. Michael, with my dad being 84 at the time, I wouldn't rule out a mix up of seeds. But with the fact that the rest of that batch yielded some peaches, I am still perplexed.
I baulk at the thought of yet another 5 year project, but I might just have to self this one and see what comes out in due time...
The complexities of clivia, I suppose, would help keeping me young...

Yes, I did by a lack of breeding information crossed Yellows to Tipperaries. All seedlings flowered orange.  Since then I have bred "yellow" Tipperaries...If you did not know it was a Tipperary you would not be able to tell the difference  between the flower color of a "normal" yellow and  that of Tipperary. It is though  easy to distinguish between the two. Simply prick the flower
"Yellow" Tipperary will bleed.
If it is a group 1 yellow it is because it got gr1 yellow genes somewhere along the way.
Be careful ...do not attempt to breed "Yellow" Tipperaries with gr 2 yellow just because of the color and the bleeding.
You will only breed oranges

Thank you, Chris, that's very useful. I will to the prick test this morning. That also answers my other question - if this was possible, what group yellow it would be.
May be interesting to cross this to a group 1 peach, or even a poor man`s peach?
I will wait to see if the yellow is of sufficient quality to breed from.

Thanks again.
