Daruma x Hirao Phyllody
« on: January 08, 2014, 17:38:43 »
Hello all!

I am starting some seeds from Li Qiang, one that intrigues me very much is the Daruma (pod plant) x Hirao Phyllody (pollen). Anyone grow this to maturity yet?  Any photos?

Hi Joey,

I saw these cross pictures on Mr. Li Quang's page and also found them very interesting, I have not seen it before, but I am sure someone on the forum with experience with crossings should give you and idea of what it could do.

Please keep us posted on the seeds as they grow, as I find it extremely interesting to see what it turns out to be.

Thank you!

My best guess is that you can expect some clivias with semi-broad daruma kind of leaves and some beautiful orange flowers with a strong green throat...

I agree totally with Mark. However, sibling crossing this progeny in 4 years time will provide some VERY exciting results. Most probably a certain % of broad leafed green flowered beauties

Peter, that's what I was hoping would eventually be able to come of this breeding. Please forgive me and my very very beginner/basic knowledge of Clivia breeding--is it possible for the seeds of this breeding to yield a broad leaf Hirao flower from the first breeding? Or is that something down the road like you mentioned?

In my opinion, if you grow enough number of F2 sibling crossed seeds (such as 100-1000 seeds) to flowering, you will be able to select some nice broad leafed green throat yellows, but not broad leaf green flowers. That means you will have to have a big place to grow all the seedlings to flowering.

Haha!  That would be tough in a NYC apartment!  But it would be fun trying!
