Mother Nature's Vengence
« on: January 02, 2014, 20:13:37 »
I had forgotten how cold it can get here in Iowa in the winter. Mother Nature is about to remind us. Sunday night it will be a brisk -28 F or -33C. Monday we will have a high of -11 F  or -23 C.  Oh, you might ask about a wind chill, yes there will be a bit of a chill, that will reach a mind numbing -50 F or -45 C.   :surprise:  IS IT SPRING YET!!!

Yeah it's headed this way too Julie... they're calling for the coldest weather we've had in quite awhile but not as cold as you're getting. Supposed to be -12F or -24C here. I feel sorry for animals out in it.  I think I'm going to move my chickens into the greenhouse for a couple of days.  Keep warm.

Am I glad it does not get so cold here in South Africa. How do you manage to grow clivias in such cold weather you must have them all indoors in winter? At - 6 degree C they get frost damage here SA but survive.
Is it the ice age and not global warming I do not understand.

Frits

That's right, Frits... plants are all moved outside for the warm months and then back in for the cold months. I envy people who can grow them outside year around.... but I do enjoy the seasons here so I guess it's worth the trouble.  And yes, this cold weather is not evidence against global warming.... it's just winter weather lol... the averages are still increasing  :)

Hi Fritz, My adult clivias are upstairs in an unheated attic. So far they have only gotten down to 40F  or 5C.  I will be watching closely when the air temperature gets down to -28F outside. I do have a small space heater up there, should be enough to keep it around 40F.

That's some awful cold, guys.  Be careful outdoors.  I heard that Chicago may have a high of -11F, (-24C) tomorrow.  Thank goodness it's not so cold here in Salt Lake City.

Another round of this weather to hit here  (OK,USA) Monday. The last round was an ice storm here at it brought down some 100 year old trees around me. What a mess.

I see you guys get a lot of ice storms, as well as tornadoes. Been through OK many times headed to Brownsville TX. Love the state, not the weather. I can deal with snow and cold,  but ice is a whole different story. Hope, it's not too bad.
