How do you water your clivia Plants
« on: March 31, 2013, 16:45:26 »
When I only had a few clivia plants in pots I used a watering can.
As my collection grew I started to use a sprinkler system.
Using the sprinkler system I found that there was more mealy bug problems.
How I water my clivia plants at the moment.
When only watering them I use the garden hose and a spray nozzle.
When fertilizing them I use a 70 ltr bucket which I place my water
soluble fertilizer into and then pump the mixture out with a 2000 ltr
per hour garden fish pond pump. As shown in the picture I have attached
a garden hose attachment to the pump to which I  attach a length of garden
hose long enough to reach all my plants. At the end of the hose I couple
a length of sprinkler system pipe and then a length of plastic electrical
tubing. The length of sprinkler system pipe is used to control the amount
of water flow. The length of electrical tubing is used to reach the back
plants easier.
A smaller pump could be used then just shorten the black sprinkler pipe.
After fertilizing my clivia plants I flush out the length of garden hose
with clean water. I then also remove any water in this hose.

Great idea LeRoy

Thanks for sharing with us.

I would also be interested to know other ways people water large collections. Not something I have to worry about yet but hopefully in the future  :)

Leroy this is a really great idea. Now to see if it will work on my collection i will require you to come around weekly for the next month to demonstrate and then i will go for the same idea.

I just use a hosepipe and water mine normally as if they would be standing in the rain. A lot of people say you should only water the potting meduim and not the plant but nature does it totally different. I sued to water only the meduim until i watched some nureseries watering their plants and their's was a lot heaalthier than mine.

Kind regards
Eddie
A lot of people's biggest regret when they pass away one day, is that they when they had the time, was too reluctant to tell the people that was important to them, how much they apreciated them

Hi Eddie

When I water with fertilizer or calcium I try and only water the medium.
When I water with plain water I normally give them a good watering down.

Mine get watered with the spray on the end of the hose so the leaves and all get a good wash at the same time.  I am fortunate in that the water here doesnt have any appreciable amounts of Iron in it so watering the foliage isnt an issue.  They all live outdoors, guess one would have to be a little more careful if they were enclosed not to overdo with wetting the centres in the cooler months.  I have an 8 ltre pressure sprayer for liquid fertilising which takes forever.

I normally hose mine in the morning so the leaves can dry off during the day but I use a watering can for liquid feeding.

Very useful and interesting topic, Leroy, thank you for raising this. It will be a few years before this becomes an issue for me!
