How about using a yellow tape?
Stick em on a cardboard or something and apply Vaseline.
Once it's full of gnats, just peel em off and throw away.
Then stick some new tape again and repeat process.
You can even stick em in the wall or plants' benches or even right in the pots if you are using plastic ones.

Note: We are talking about "controlling" them gnats here.
And not about totally getting rid of them....forever!

Nice idea. Yellow electrical tape on the inside rim of the pot. Excellent!

My method is small pebbles on top of the pots. It works very well. :D
