Are there any "Classic" Clivias
« on: March 30, 2012, 18:09:15 »
I wonder whether there is any consensus yet about whether there are any "classic" Clivias.  Clivias that are so harmonious and exceptional that while they will always be used as parents, the original will persist as touchstone of quality and style.  I wonder if our breeding history is still too short to offer up such plants to general acclaim.  In the older and larger rose community I could think of Souvenir de la Malmaison or Peace or several others that would fit this category, or Valentines Day in the case of reticulata Camellias.  Are there any Clivia candidates yet?

Vico Yellow. Was the standard for yellows for decades and still a "must" for a serious collection. One of my plants that I would never give up.

I agree Jon .
 " Bertie`s Bronze " will always be a Classic for me .
I will always remember the 2002 International Conference in Pietermaritzburg my hometown.
A "Bertie`s Bronze " offset fetched the unheard of price of R 13,600 .00 at the Auction .
I think it was below the reserve Bertie had set ,as they had to ask him if he would accept that offer.
Does anyone know who bought the plant ,I am sure the buyer was an American.
I could not believe my eyes when I saw it on display ,we thought yellows ,Wittig Pink and  Chubb peach were
the ultimate clivias .

I totally agree with TK Original.
My TK Yellows are now all blooming and TKO holds the throne.
Better than Hirao Green in fact.

Charl's Green, bred by Charl Malan.

Charl's Green sold for R32,000 at the Pretoria International Clivia Conference about 6 years ago. It is still a VERY scarce plant, understandably jealously guarded by the owners!

If we talk about a breeding line, the Appleblossoms must be included as well.

kirstenbosch yellow the plant that bought yellows to the masses
Anna meyers peach won so many awards but was kept from distribution now we get stunning yellows and peaches from it
Naude peach the secret plant in fantastic crosses
floradale apricot stunning crosses
noyce sunburst wow what a head

BUT NO CLIVIA EXCEPT FOR MAYBE VICO YELLOW CAN HAVE THE STATUS OF PEACE we just dont have the market to compare with roses  if you speak to a normal gardener you can be assured that they know names such as peace queen elithabeth double delight ect the numbers are on the side of roses

I agree with Berties Bronze, TKO and Hirao Green.  Gunston must be with them as well.
