A horse called Clivia raced in Victoria in 1911. Not much. Just thought it was interesting.....wonder why?

It is interesting.  I would hazard to guess that a horse named Clivia would be more attractive than a clivia named Horse.   :mmm:

What intrigues me is whether the namesake is the beloved plant genus or the ship ? or the German principality. I love the romantic folklore of ship captains stopping to rewater and get land supplies collecting south African plant gems and bringing them as custodian to new colony leading plant collectors. Did the horse get named by a new immigrant from/passing through South Africa, did the plant make an impression on a solider from the South African War. I guess we might never know.

Michael,
Clivia is also a woman's name. The operetta "Clivia" was big hit in Berlin in 1933. It was composed by the Austrian Nico Dostal and the story takes place in South America. Clivia is the heroine. Some of the music is very beloved.

Granted, this operetta was written after the horse race but it shows that Clivia was used as a woman's name. (unless Dostal just pulled it out of somewhere!)
Here are 2 album covers:

Many horses have been named after women, hopefully not too many women have been named after horses!
Roger, did you name a horse or a clivia GiGi?
Cheers,
Marilyn
