Michael you asked so nicely i could not resist.
What i find interresting is in the first pic there is one totally yellow pod and the rest are all dark. Maybe i get something special.

They are like kids.
Different pollen parents, different seedpod characteristics.
Different sizes, different shapes, different colors, differnt maturity.

Just harvested the ripe/colored berries today.
They all have the same pollen daddy.

Michael,

I did not do a lot of crosses this year, but here are a few of them.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I love the colour change from unripe to ripe.
Eddie and Maria, it is odd the random size and seed count that occurs with one pollination.
LT sure seems you are an experienced hand at multiple (and very tasty) crosses, with much success. Cheers

Good luck, Eddie, with your yellow pod. LT, you have used some awesome pollen this year!

Lovely berries are here to be seen.

And perhaps you will all weep this flower season, if the clivias do not bloom satisfying, as they have to sustain the berries?

Best regards,
Elke

Hi all,
After seeing Hugh's You Tube footage last year of peeling seeds and how green the pods were, I decided to try picking some green and leaving some till they were ripe last year on the same umbel. There was no difference in seed size(I thought the ripe ones may have gotten bigger when left to ripen) and the green seeds were way easier to peel. No sloppy flesh around the seeds. No seeds skittleing across the floor when they slip out of your fingers. Therefore this year I am picking and peeling when there is a hint of colour on the pods. So much better!!

Here are a few seed pods from Wellington, South Africa. I have started to harvest some of the seeds today, but the green ones will still be left for a few weeks. I added a golf ball in some of the photos to show the size of some of these barries.

Enjoy.

Hi Chris

Really good looking seedpods you have there !!!!

I thought we are cultivating clivias but now i see some guys are trying to grow their own golf and ping pong balls. Are they that expensive (Only joking)

Do you find that when you spend ample time on pollinating that the seedpods are bigger than the ones that was just done quickly ?

Eddie

Well the colours are interesting of the berries .

Humus the berries that are picked and are still green is what worries me. I have found that seeds that were picked green seem to take longer to grow and germinate than ripe berries. Has any one experienced this?

Elke I had the problem that when the plant produced lots of berries it did not flower the next flowering season. This I over come by giving the plant extra fertilizer like Nitro cane plus. I have had two umbels on a plant both full of berries and the next season it still produced another flower. So you can over come the stress to give the plant extra feeding to have food reserves for the next season.

Chris you did some good cross pollination there to see the berries nearly the size of a golf ball. You can see the berries that are small mite have two to three seeds in and that mite be it own pollen that was pollinated.

Gray it is easer to clean green berries but if you pick them ripe and squash the seeds out of the berry and let the seeds dry for a week or so then the seeds are easy to clean. You just rub them clean and no slipping of seeds and there is no sloppy flesh and your fingers don't even get stained. :woohoo:

Regards Frits
