TEN OUT OF TEN!! The main reason I am in favor of registration is, that I believe it will protect the species in many ways, such as maintain the quality of plants and purity of the species. It will give us a proper data base, built out the hobby and add value.

There are many other hobbies we can learn from but as a daylily hybridizer let me use daylilies as an example and particular daylilies in the USA. The Hemerocallis Society of America has a registration system in place and I think it is safe to say, daylilies is a HUGE business, all over the world. I believe a great deal of their success lies in their registration system.

I am looking forward to study this new ?suggested? online registration system and also believe that the hard work and long debates have just started
(hopefully only to improve and fine tune it).

Congratulations to those who have contributed to this!

Chris
PS. As a beginner I raised this topic in March this year under GENERAL CLIVIA QUESTIONS.

Chris,
The Clivia Checklist and Register has existed for several years. In 2009 it was published and distributed to members of the Clivia Society, so this is just a continuation of what has been already happening in a much more accessible format. I ended up having to go through every lisiting and was amazed at the amount of work Ken Smith put into it.
Lionel,
You have many stunning plants that deserve to be part of the Clivia legacy.
Cheers,
Marilyn

Marilyn,

Thank you, some forum members did  inform me about Ken Smith and his register. I tried to contact him but never had any success.

I agree whole heartedly with your comment to Lionel.

A hypothetical situation:

IF this is a Chinese Broad Leaf Painted Face Yellow Flowering Plant with spectacular blooms.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I bought this plant from a seller without knowing the plant's breeding history.  I want to register this plant as
C.M. Sir Lionel Bester.  Is that ok?

What do we do when the plants that we buy do not have a breeding background but a number, as in the case with Hattori plants.  Is it ok to call / register it as C.M. Sir Lionel Bester or do we have to register it as C.M. Hattori's Sir Lionel Bester?

LT,
I noticed many people have registered plants they did not know the breeding history of but gave detailed information about the plant; flower size, color, leaf width, in other words the characteristics that make it unique. It also has to be noteworthy enough to appear in the pages of a Clivia Society publication. Thankfully I just set the thing up online....all changes, all questions should go to Ken Smith. I gave birth to this baby today and abandoned it 1 second later. I will not edit anything... it is none of my business.
Notice that the online register is a checklist and register. Very few of the plants are fomally registered.

Hi L.T.,

I hope your are well.

You are now getting into the mechanics of a registration system and yes, a proper system will be able to answer these questions for you. Whilst I am not informed about the back ground and all the work Ken has done, I do believe such a system can only be run by the Clivia Society.

May I be hypothetical about some of your questions? An outstanding plant WILL be registered (by the breeder), so when you buy it, it WILL have a name. If it is not registered, you might not want to buy it. This should be the end result with a system in place once it has settled.

Hi Marilyn ,

Thank you for taking this on yourself . I think that this is a great reference tool and should be supported by as many breeders / growers as possible .

Thank you again .

Hi Marilyn
Thanks for the effort that you have put in so far, my pennies worth the following
when i started to get serous about clivia i read as many books on the subject as possible and if it was not for the names of the plants would not have gained the knowledge i have today
My hours was spend on reading up on vico yellow gold berties bronze, ect ect
i know that these are good plants and that they are worth the money you pay for them.
i feel this is the first of many steps that protect the future generation of breeders we also need to put more steps in place tp protect the young future breeders by for example keep more rekord on names like where a cameron is crossed with a yellow people still refer to the seeds as camerons ect also the question of strains like the sahins are a prime example of this
Victor has a point with the question of his peaches a debate that got ugly
i have a few plants i will register this year when a person a person buys offset he will know what they are
one thing that frustrates the hell out of me is when breeders list seed asw a19993 ect a name is more classy and shows that that breeder was proud of his plant in fact so proud that he gave it a name
when you read clivia nature and nuture you see all the nmed plants in the back of the book with photos and it makes you dream about all those lovely plants that are named
also when you read up foe example of beachbum x berties you no how these plants look and what there offspring are likely to be
as mentioned about daylilies the breeders names are there if you buy a plant and it is bred by stamile you know it will be a good plant like if lionel puts hilton in front of his plant you know it will be good because you are not going to put your name on a not so good plant
this is my cents wort thanks again for the effort you and so many people have put in
not so much for us but a future generation maybe in 50 years they will also speak of current breeders in awe like sir peter maybe they will speak of lionel l.t marilyn and be able to relate to the plants and history of our generation
regards

Dear L.T. ,
Yes please go ahead and register that plant !!! :good: :good: :good:

Please Martin,
You know me and my background to clivia growing.
I have no illusions of " Clivia Grandeur " in the future.
If it were not for the money , I would not be so involved.
I have no specialised knowledge of clivia ,just the ability to stand for hours and hours transfering pollen , at a whim , from anther to stigma.
If anything I think I would do the world of botany a greater service were I to spend more time and energy on environmental issues.
If more people do not get involved soon ,there might not be a future generation to enjoy clivias.

Regards,
          Lionel.

Hi Lionel
You are not in it for money only when i see you i see the pride you have in your plants its not your search of grandeur im talking about most future breeders wont have met you nor have i met naka or sir peters but the respect i have for them and many others are enormous they set standards and that is the respect im talking about there are many others like oom bing ,bertie and to many to name they like you were not after grandeur but there passion andlove have earned them that status there are many other breedres today who will be remembered the likes of shaun ectect too many to name and it is through them and people like you that a future generation yes there will be one will be gratefull for all the effort and time they put in and you do have a knowledge of clivia dont sell yourself short we know!! what knowledge you have so be a good boy and just accept praise when it is due believe me we do it to little

Shame it was not web 2.0 so it had a collaborative aspect in user generated content, ie, more information and photos being uploaded.

Martin ,
I would have left it at that were it not that you ended with a ?

My friends and fellow members in the KZN clivia club also log onto the forum.
They see what I write and keep me honest.
They know where I have aquired most of my collection.
They also know that I have never claimed to have bred ANY clivia of significance.
So it is more about staying grounded than not being able to accept praise .

You are very generous,
                              Lionel.
