The nasty Belgians: Never too young to flower!
« on: March 09, 2010, 00:52:26 »
Dear friends,

we all know that the Belgians are very keen in flowering at a very early stage, but this little guy surprised me though!
Bred from my 98-29 (Victor's First Pinks) X Odeon and being two months old (!), he started off.

(Most of the babies show Pastel pigmentation, some are green-stemmed)

Enjoy and best wishes,

Joyce.

Most unusual. You must hold the world record for the earliest flowering clivia now!

I suspect it won't qualify as a flower though, as there are no reproductive features, but still very interesting.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Tedd,

I repotted them in summer, most of them are in larger pots of two now. I am not sure but think the little one didn't make it, or is still recovering from his first bloom  :D. Will have a closer look at my seedlings tomorrow (about 300, all in the basement with heating mats and large windows, but added artificial light, too) and tell you then.

We have very early frost and snow here, and some Clivias decided to push a flower scape  ;D ;D ;D

Best,

Joyce.

     Hello Joyce,
We have early cold and snow here, as well.  We have about 20 cm of snow on the ground, and more in the mountains.  Maybe I will get lucky, and have some early flowers, too.  Please post photos of yours as they open. :)

Hi all,

I was wrong! Down in the basement the little one is still alive and kickin'! It is a twin plant, lightly pigmented (probably Peach) despite the colour of the "early flowers". Guess in two or three years we will know  :)

HUMUS, your litte one looks amazing, will keep fingers crossed (can you tell about the parents?)!

MIKE, I really hate snow and the cold season in general though I know the plants really need the cold time of year. Walking the dogs isn't funny when you have to watch your steps, most of the time the snow is muddy and we all need a nice little shower afterwards, it is fully dark even at 5 p.m., you have to drive carefully instead of letting the car find its way, and I do not like being dressed like a monster to bear the cold.
Will post flowers when they are fully open  :rose:

Best winter wishes,

Joyce.
