Title: The importance of the Pod parent
Post by: Martin on March 11, 2017, 13:33:09
When looking at the breeding of Clivia there are certain traits that are only carried over by the pod parent here I will share some knowledge that is applicable
Firstly the pod parent carries the variegation, leaf width and multi petal traits
Variegation
It is only carried by the pod parent I know that there are claims that Tiger variegation is carried over in a small percentage from the pollen parent but I have not read  of a breeder that can give the genuine percentage and it is minuscule
Leaf with
It is a trait carried over by the pod parent that is why a lot of breeders use Datums for breeding it takes long to achieve the goal so it is sometimes a good thing to buy a broadleaf that has got all your end goals bred in I sometimes see yellow broadleaf weeds advertised so I think that is the way to go
Multipetal
Only carried by the pod parent  but there are claims that if you use two multi petal plants the multipetal traits are intensified I can't confirm that
Please feel free to agree or disagree I promise I will not be offended and look FWD to your views again I give this tip for today  please members share yours too

Martin

Martin, thanks for starting a conversation.
In reference to Clivia, the fruit that contains the seeds is call a berry. Clivia are not legumes.IMHO.
In regards to variegated foliage, I agree, results are obtained from the berry plant, I often am at a loss why variegated plants are used as the pollen parent....
