Thanks Gerhard.  These are the smaller ones, there are some bigger pods.  I am sure the people who are receiving these seeds will be very please.

Hi Lionel,

At least you have the destination correct.  They are going on a trip to South Africa (and Germany).  I hope those people will treat this legendary American Royalty with great care.  I would have included you but I am afraid you are running out space  :mmm:.

Lionel , you see what happens when you show people pics of your growing area / shade house !

L.T., here in S.A. , even that US Quarter is royalty !

LT., Eugene.
It is only due to the fact that you have not seen Lionel's "little" growing area, that you are able to think it is restricted in size.
On > 3 ha, there is enough space for anything BIG, AND SMALL.
The few areas he shows us all, is totaly misleading.
I think he is using a golf cart to visit the far off sections.
Then he normaly takes a picnic basket with, for lunch.

Stef and Eugene,

I am sure those areas will be full very soon, knowing Lionel.   :poke:

Beside, this is a 'big plant with big umbels' - so I wouldn't want to take up his precious growing space.  Maybe a lady in Germany with a nice yard can give these seeds a good home.

Big seed pods from big plants.  It took 2 people to move this pot.

Elke, A big pot with lots of plants in it for you.  The plants are going to their new home.

Heinie,

Here is the proof.  I hope this is good enough for you.  I believe your pod is from one of those spikes!

Now, short of you coming here to inspect the plants!

Tran,
      I am a simple man.
I have the greatest admiration for people who accumulate such wealth.
Just thinking of administering that estate makes me tired.
The responsibilities of owning all of that must be immense.
It would be way beyond me.
Would they consider an offer on the "Gardeners Cottage"
Reckon I would be happy to pay the owner to live and work in that paradise.
Long as the owners aren`t grumpy.

At long last a photo of you.I take it you are the young "Spunky" gentleman.
Who is the other guy, also a plantsman ?

Regards,
          Lionel.

LT, as Lionel says, that gardener's mansion is something to wish for.
And the surrounding area looks so peaceful.
I don't see any burglar proofing anywhere. :surprise:
Does it also snow there in winter? I can only imagine the picture then.

I am sorry Lionel, the property was sold recently.  You were too late.  I hope I am still going to be allowed on the grounds to visit the gardens with the new owner.  They are doing a make over for the property.

Stef,

Yes, we have snow here.  When I have time, have to show the pets - the belties.

Stef:

We don't have bars on the windows, most places in the USA. In some large cities, in the worst neighborhoods (gangs and all) there are bars.  Otherwise no one has them here.  A simple fence and door is enough.

L. T.,
it's been at least 20 years, that I visited the USA. What is the diameter of a US quarter?

This plant is just giant! Is it the same plants as in the Philadelphia Show? Then I am wondering, that the seeds are still on the plant.

If it is the plant from that exhibition, please show us in this topic a photo again to complete the impression of this fantastic plant.

The estate of Sir John Thouron is just outstanding!

I am glad, too, not needing burglar bars in our house.

With kind regards,
Elke

Start preparing for space now Elke!  LOL!

Sir John Thouron is BIG and BEAUTIFUL!
I should think that the SJTs of Longwood Garden would be of the same clone LT?
The donated ones???

Longwood's SJTs in the recent clivia show.

Maria,

Sir John gave plants to Longwood Gardens, who then used them in their breeding program and gave the plants to White Flower Farm to sell in the 90s, if my memory is correct.  My plants are direct from Sir John's Greenhouse.  In any event, I am sure they are the same clone.

It is a big plant.

Don't worry Elke, these SJTs are really old already.
Here's what a younger SJT looks like.

Thank you very much, Maria and L. T., for the pictures of the clivia ?Sir John Thouron?!

Maria, you are right: SJT is really big and very beautiful. And it looks healthy: No yellow or brown leaf tips are to be seen. I am always annoyed at leaves with brown or yellow tips. I do not like them. And the young plant is marvellous as well.

L. T., I am glad, that I will have the chance to grow such a famous and beautiful plant. I will take good care of it with all TLC, I can give.

With kind regards,
Elke

Even the seeds of Sir John are beautiful.  They look as if they were dipped in a golden lacquer.
Thanks to LT, and also to Mike Riska for making several batches of his Sir John Thouron X Self seeds available through Ebay last year, and to my friends Clarence and Gail for so graciously giving me a few.  Now begins a friendly race to see who brings this wonderful cross to bloom first. :)
